Dust transport · Crete and the Aegean

Crete under a red sky

On 1 April 2026 Crete woke under a red-orange sky. A deep low crossing the Mediterranean had pulled a southerly gale from Libya over the sea, and with it one of the thickest dust clouds the island had seen in years. Flights were disrupted, schools kept children inside and Greek health services fielded hundreds of calls.

What happened

On 31 March a deep low, named Erminio by Greek forecasters, crossed the central Mediterranean towards Greece.N3 Ahead of it a strong southerly wind blew from Libya across the Libyan Sea. By the morning of 1 April the sky over Heraklion and Chania was deep orange, and visibility at the airports fell sharply.N2N3

Reports spoke of particle concentrations above 1,000 µg m⁻³, among the highest in more than a decade, and of hundreds of calls to emergency services.N1 By 3 April the wind had turned and the air over the island was clear again.

The weather behind it

The setup was the classic one for spring dust storms in the eastern Mediterranean. A trough at 500 hPa swung down over the western Mediterranean, and a surface low formed on its eastern side. Between the low and higher pressure to the east, the wind about 1.5 km up blew from the desert straight to Crete.

Crete's worst dust storm on record, in March 2018, grew from the same pattern: a low deepening off Libya, with dust swept north ahead of it.S1 That event tripled emergency calls and grounded flights.S2

How unusual

The departure-from-normal map shows the whole southern Aegean far beyond the top of the scale on 1 April. At Heraklion the spike stands alone: the weeks before and after hover near the normal.
